Carissa Cabrera is a marine educator based in Oahu, Hawaii. While on a dive with her friend Lauren, Cabera noticed a coral that was entangled by monofilament, so the two worked together to untangle it. She helped bring to life the Marine Debris Program at Hawaii Marine Animal Response, which her friend Lauren now leads.

According to a 2020 report from the World Wildlife Fund, at least 10% of marine trash is from fishing waste. Cabrera says small-scale, sustainable fishing practices can help reduce the amount of fishing gear polluting the oceans.
