State media reported on Monday that more than 80,000 people have been evacuated due to torrential rains and flooding in southwestern China's Sichuan province. Water levels in the province's main rivers were above warning levels following heavy rains from Friday to Sunday. One reservoir in Dazhou City exceeded the flood limit by 2.2 meters, according to China's official news service. More than 440,000 people are said to have been affected by floods in six cities in the province. The state broadcaster said Saturday that heavy rain had already caused an economic loss of 250 million yuan in Sichuan province, with 45 houses destroyed and 118 seriously damaged. China usually experiences heavy rains in the summer, but experts warn that it must now make its cities more resilient as extreme weather conditions become more frequent. Extremes such as high temperatures and heavy rainfall have become more frequent, and the level of climate risk in China is increasing.
