Fishlaw1's Top 5 Most Versatile Dither Fish For Community Aquariums

I apologize for the typo in Jewel Cichlid Photo. It should read Jewel Fish, not Jewfish!!!

The term dither fish refers to an arbitrary group of aquarium fish, commonly used by aquarists, to help reduce innate timidity and aggression as well as to promote normal social behavior in the other fish housed within the same aquarium. Disclaimer: Copied from - Wikipedia

Number 1.)
The Convict Cichlid most commonly has a grey to silver body with multiple black vertical bars along the length of its body. These fishes may have iridescent patches along their elongated anal and dorsal fins. During breeding, female Convict Cichlid bellies may be slightly orange or red.

Number 2.)
Silver Dollar Habitat and Care
Silver dollars are hardy and easy to care for. Although this fish is fairly durable, the aquarist must maintain a very large tank for them. A school or six or more will require an aquarium of 75 gallons or larger. Silver dollars prefer subdued lighting, dark substrate, plenty of room to move about, as well as many good hiding places.

It’s advisable to use plastic plants or very sturdy live plants because they will eat most live plants. They do best in soft moderately acidic water, although they're not fussy about water conditions. Silver dollars are not overly demanding about water quality, though they do best in clean and clear, well-aerated, and well-filtered moving water.

Number 3.)
The rainbowfish are a family, Melanotaeniidae, of small, colourful, freshwater fish found in northern and eastern Australia, New Guinea (including islands in Cenderawasih Bay and Raja Ampat Islands in Indonesia), Sulawesi and Madagascar.

Number 4.)
The very popular tiger barb is an easy fish to care for and can be fun to watch as it swims at high speed in schools of six or more. It is not, however, an ideal fish for a community tank as it does nip any fish with flowing fins and can be mildly aggressive. When well cared for, tiger barbs have a lifespan of five to seven years.

Number 5.)
The jewel cichlid is actually a genus of cichlids native to Africa. These species range from about 3 inches to nearly 12 inches in length, though they tend to be smaller in the home aquarium than in the wild. Most jewel cichlids are very brightly colored and their colors become even more intense during breeding.
