A ferry assisted in evacuations of hundreds of Limni village residents by the sea as wildfires raged close on the island of Evia late on Friday.
Both the sea and the sky appeared tinted with a red colour reflecting the flames raging close to the beach.
Families with children, residents with their pets, and tourists were seen desperately boarding the ferry that took them to Edipsos.
According to the ferry's captain, nearly 1,000 people were evacuated via ferry.
According to local sources, a 38-year-old volunteer firefighter died while battling the wildfire in an area north of Athens, and at least 20 people have needed treatment across the country.
Although the causes for the fires are still under investigation, Greek and European authorities have pointed fingers towards climate change for the many wildfires raging from southern Italy to Greece and Turkey.
