Testosterone deficiency, also called late onset hypogonadism, is a fairly common condition in men 50+. Especially in men who are overweight and obese, low testosterone is one of the consequences. It's a vicious circle, that is called the metabolic syndrome. Other features include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, gout and diabetes. Men with the metabolic syndrome also very likely suffer from sleep apnea which in turn triggers low testosterone levels due to a disturbed day/night rhythm. But also aging is responsible for the decreased testosterone production. For men 50+, it is important to look out for the signs and symtpoms. The AMS rating scale is a tool that is availabe online and helps with the diagnosis. But lab tests are the cornerstone. For treatment, a gel once in the morning or depot injections every three months, are used. Dr. med. dr. phil. Stefan Buntrock, urologist from Göttingen, gives an overview on UroChannel.
