Why Canelo is so hard to hit? When you of Canelo Alvarez, you don't think of your typical Mexican style type fighter.
There's an overall consensus that all Mexican fighters fight the same way. Come forward, no defense, take 1 shot to land 2 and brawl.
Most boxing casuals think Mexican style is just one style. That's the furthest thing from the truth.
Even though that's what a lot of boxing fans like to see. Boxing fans like to see fights. Blood, sweet and tears. Blow for blow nonstop action.
When it comes to Canelo. I've observed that he's a combination of different Mexican and American styles.
Canelo does fight Mexican style. He just doesn't fight the typical Mexican style of fighting that fans of the past are used to.
The old rock'em sock'em Mexican style of fighting will get you killed in the ring. You'll take a lot of unnecessary punishment when you don't have to.
Canelo does pressure fighters with the typical Mexican style way of pressuring fighters into a mistake.
But the one thing that I've noticed about the Mexican style of boxing that Canelo employs is that he's always in a position to land his punch.
He's always setting you up for the counter, and he uses his footwork and faints to set everything up.
Canelo's offense is setup by his defense. Canelo uses certain defensive principles to setup his opponents for vicious body shots, hooks and uppercuts.
He's very patient during fights and he trust the game plan.
Fighters like Pernell Whitaker and Floyd Mayweather Junior knew how to use defensive to set up their offense.
One thing you will notice about these type of fighters is when you make a mistake, they're always in a position to counter, slip punches by inches and land punches from angles their opponent didn't see coming.
Canelo doesn't fight wild or sloppy like a Shawn Porter or a Marcos Maidana. Canelo fights more economical.
He sets traps with his defense to make his opponent think he sees something that's not there. Floyd Mayweather was a master at this.
Canelo is perfect when it comes to anticipation and timing his opponents.
Even though a lot of Mexican fans won't admit this. But the Floyd Mayweather loss was the best thing that happened to Canelo.
He learned a lot that day about the importance of defense, faints, angles, footwork, how to set traps and how to use your defense to setup your offense.
Mexican greats like Juan Manuel Marquez, Pipino Cuevas, Ruben Olivarez, Erik Morales, Carlos Zarate, Salvador Sanchez & Julio Ceasar Chavez did not fight the same.
Mexican style boxing is continuous pressure that's designed to break your opponent with a relentless offensive body attacks and pressure.
Pressure fighting creates a since of urgency in your opponents mind that makes him make a mistake.
And you have to be willing to fight to the end. You have to be stubborn. You have to be willing to take a punch in order to get your shots off.
Although Canelo Alvarez fighting style is not the typical Mexican style fighting. Canelo fights with a different variation of the Mexican style.
Will this be enough to beat Caleb Plant next Saturday on November 6? I don't know?
But I do believe that this will be a great fight while it last.
