In the aftermath of World War II, Western countries close to the Soviet Union were concerned about the vulnerability of their airbases. This led the new German Air Force, the Bundesluftwaffe, to develop a unique aircraft that few believed could take to the skies: a vertical takeoff and landing troop transport.

Designated Dornier Do 31, the aircraft was an ambitious project from the start. But the German engineers made it happen and built three prototypes. The result was a troop transport with ten engines.

As of this day, the Dornier Do 31 is the only VTOL jet transport ever produced to set five world records that have not yet been surpassed by any other aircraft.
