This dark, heavy, boxy vintage dresser needed a BIG TIME makeover and she got one! This was my first time building a custom base for a piece with Kreg Jig for pocket holes (similar to what many other youtubers are doing). It was a little more of a struggle than I anticipated, though I expect it would be easier with a proper mitre saw or table saw.
Using Fusion Mineral paint as a glaze, I'm applying only one coat which allows the woodgrain to *peek* through the paint. I can't possibly be the only one to have discovered this ability with a select few of Fusion's colours, but I haven't seen anyone else do it, so I thought I would share my process with you.
This technique was actually discovered by accident a few months back when I did a similar dresser, and wanted to apply a custom mixed teal. Both Renfrew Blue and Coal Black by Fusion are slightly transparent so I put on the first coat, fully expecting to need two or three coats for full coverage. But to my surprise, I LOVED the look of the single coat- it was behaving like a glaze or semi-transparent coloured stain, and thus, a new technique was born!
This look won't appeal to everyone, but I think it's unique and beautiful and I can still see a bit of the woodgrain through the paint, so I love that part of it as well! Hope you enjoy!
