Federal govt to increase fines for serious data breaches to a minimum of $50m

The Federal government will increase the financial penalty for companies suffering serious data breaches at a minimum of $50 million - following the Optus and Medibank data hacks.

Attorney General Mark Dreyfus indicated he would fast-track amendments to the Privacy Act when parliament returns next week.

Companies will be fined the highest amount of three possible penalties under the new laws.
