Is calisthenics functional? This is a bit of a vague question, but hear me out!
I think that every training modality has pros and cons. I've always maintained that, in order to develop a fully well-rounded performance profile, you should be combining different types of training. I certainly think calisthenics is very functional, depending on your goals. BUT I also think it has gaps and weaknesses that can be plugged in order to build the most all-round performance, possible.
Calisthenics is *particularly* functional thanks to its focus on core strength, on mobility, and on proprioception. To achieve high-level calisthenics skills, you need a huge amount of body control and an incredible level of commitment.
But while bodyweight training is functional in that sense, it also leaves out a few things - like rotational strength and hip hinges. In this video, I explore the topic in more depth and provide some tips on getting the most from your calisthenics routine.
What do you think? Is calisthenics functional? What does it miss out on? Let me know below and thanks for watching!
